Doug achieved his NAUI Open Water certification in May 1972. He didn’t advance his diving certifications for many years; however, he did increase his dive experience. Doug joined the U.S. Coast Guard where he gained a lot of diving experience serving as a Boarding Officer, Surf Engineer & Coxswain, Emergency Medical Technician, and Rescue Diver/Swimmer.
During his 52 years of diving, he has accumulated in excess of 5,000 dives, 1,000 rescue dives, and over 300 low-visibility/night dives. While he was able to dive in the warm waters of the South Pacific, most of his dives were performed in black waters or cold waters (38°F to 50°F) of the Pacific Northwest. When he wasn’t on a mission, he earned extra money working on the local fishing boats. He would do whatever they needed to include changing hull zincs, scraping barnacles, and clearing nets and lines from their props.
Following Doug’s retirement, he decided to continue with his passion and advance his diving certifications and experience. Since then, he has earned the NAUI Diver Master Certification and is a NAUI Instructor-in-Training. Additionally, he volunteers at the Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium as a diver.
